When am I of Legal Age?

U.S. History Level II (Grades 5-6)

Standard 18

The Student:

Understands the rise of the American labor movement and how political issues reflected social and economic changes

Benchmark 1

The Student:

  • Understands changes in business and labor practices during the late Nineteenth century (e.g., reasons for child labor and it consequences, changes in business operation, how workers lives were affected after the Civil War)

Civics

Standard 18:

The Student:

Understands the role and importance of law in the American constitutional system and issues regarding the judicial protection of individual rights

Benchmark 10

The Student:

  • Knows the basic principles of the juvenile system and the major differences between the due process rights of juveniles and adults

Standard 27

The student:

Understands how certain character traits enhance citizens' ability to fulfill personal and civic responsibilities

Benchmark 3

The Student:

  • Understands the importance for individuals and society of commonly held civic responsibilities such as paying taxes, being informed and attentive to public issues, monitoring political leaders and governmental agencies and taking appropriate action if their adherence to constitutional principles is lacking, deciding whether and how to vote, participating in civic groups, performing public service, serving as a juror, and serving in the armed forces.

Understands the importance of political leadership, public service, and a knowledgeable citizenry in American constitutional democracy

Benchmark 7:

The Student:

  • Understands why becoming knowledgeable about public affairs and the values and principles of American constitutional democracy and communicating that knowledge to others is an important form of participation, and understands the argument that constitutional democracy requires the participation of an attentive, knowledgeable, and competent citizenry
