COMING IN THE 2006-2007 BROADCAST SEASON
A FOUR-PART PBS SERIES ON THE SUPREME COURT AND ITS IMPACT
This educator's site is being developed in support of a four-hour public television series on the history, workings, and impact of the Supreme Court that is tentatively scheduled to premiere in the 2006-2007 broadcast season.
As yet untitled, the series is a production of Thirteen/WNET in New York. New York Life is the series' sole corporate sponsor.
Over its four hours, the series will explore the Court's sometimes turbulent history and follow its arc from a rather vaguely defined institution to its present position as the ultimate authority in a judicial system that is co-equal with, and on occasion superior to, the Executive and Legislative branches of the government.
Series viewers will meet a remarkable cross-section of Americans--from Supreme Court Justices and Chief Justices to the ordinary American citizens (sometimes disfranchised and discriminated against) who brought the cases that changed the course of American history.
The Court's rulings have touched virtually every area of daily life. This series--the first ever to present the Court's full story--will, for many viewers, transform the Court from a remote institution into one that plays a vital and changing role in Americans' understanding of who they are.
This material is currently being developed by a collaboration of academics and classroom teachers all over America. If you have an idea for anything on this site and would like to join the collaboration and be paid for your efforts, click here.
